1999 Pinot Noir – Santa Maria Valley
Dark ruby color with aromas of black cherry, exotic herbs, and sandalwood. On the palate a profound complexity of ripe red and black fruits. Grapes from Bien Nacido and Dierberg vineyards. Bottled 3/3/2001.
1999 Pinot Noir – Bien Nacido Vineyard
From fruit harvested at just over one ton per acre, this offering from the fabled Bien Nacido Vineyard is a saturated dark ruby color with a purple edge. The grapes that produced this wine are from 28 year old vines of the Pommard clone on their own root. Picked at 24.5 Brix in late September and fermented in small bins with a combination of native and prepared yeast, this lush wine has an exotic perfume of cinnamon, cloves, mint, a panoply of sweet red and black fruit, smoked meats and asian spices. Mouthfilling on the entry and full on the midpalate, with flavors of black raspberries, plums and ripe Bing cherries, this Pinot Noir lingers and has a long sweet finish with a grip that is characteristic of this vineyard. Bottled 3/3/2001.
1999 La Colline Pinot Noir
From grapes grown at the foot of Mount Picacho, an ancient and we hope extinct volcano, from a selected hillside block of 25 year old Pinot Noir, this wine was made from fruit harvested at a whopping one half ton per acre. Due to this vineyard’s unique terroir, it’s proximity to the ocean (four miles), stony soil of loam and lcay mixed in with volcanic material, and the varying exposure of the hillsides, in cool years such as 1999, the fruit can struggle to ripen. However one warm weekend in late September came to the rescue and we were able to miraculously produce this wine. It is, as you would expect, rich and sumptuous with a saturated ruby color. The aromas of this wine as it sits in the glass, being to unfold revealing layer upon layer of ripe plum, framboise and blueberries. With a dense core of fruit on the palate, this wine is mouthfilling and lush but still supple. A unique Pinot experience. Bottled 3/3/2001
1999 Evelyn Pinot Noir
First produced in 1998, this wine is our homage to Evelyn Waldron who believed in our vision from the beginning. In vintages that we produce this wine, Evelyn will represent the pinnacle of that vintage. It may not be the biggest or fattest but it will be the most balanced, supple and elegant Pinot Noir. In 1999 the wines that made up this three barrel bland were our two favorite Bien Nacido barrels and our favorite barrel from a new vineyard, Dierberg, about which we are very excited. This wine is best described as plush and velvety. Flavor and aromatic profies are similar to the Bien Nacido but the perfume is more haunting and the silky finish longer.
1999 Chardonnay – Bien Nacido Vineyard
Medium straw color with beautiful ripe fruit characteristics. This wine has aromas of tropical fruit, hazelnut, peach liqueur, along with hints of orange blossom. It exhibits an excellent balance of fruit and acidity. Bottled 2/7/2001.
1999 Chardonnay – Santa Maria Valley
This wine shows aromas of honeysuckle, nectar, pineapple, lime blossom, coconut and vanilla. The balance of fruit and acidity give a wonderful roundness to this wine. Bottled 2/7/2001.
1999 Chardonnay – Talley Vineyard
We feel fortunate to be able to make Chardonnay from Talley fruit. It is impeccable farmed in an ideal terroir for Chardonnay. This offering from the Rincon block, exhibits tropical fruit characteristics of mango, ginger, coconut and hints of white peaches. Because of the exceedingly low yield, this vintage has an extra measure of viscosity and intensity but manages to stay on its feet. We hope what we lack in quantity we compensate for in pleasure. Bottled 2/7/2001.
1999 Sangiovese – Paso Robles
Rose petals, raspberries, strawberries, honey, anise. Rich on the plate but supple and well balanced. Grapes from French Camp Vinyeard in the far mountain lion east country of Paso Robles. Bottled 2/7/2001.
