2003 White Wines Brosseau Chardonnay Chalone AVA From 25 year old vines planted to the Wente Clone which produces small clusters of small berries, this fruit tends to develop ripe flavors at lower sugar levels. Grown in a clay and limestone soil, this wine has Meursault- like weight on the palate and aromas of pear, hazelnut and wet stones. This offering is mouth filling yet buttressed by a web of structure. Fermented with the indigenous yeast from the vineyard, the wine shows good concentration with a hint of lemon drops and the flavors and aromas continue to unfold in the glass.
Talley – Rincon Chardonnay Arroyo Grande Valley From the 20 year old Rincon Vineyard this offering shows full ripe flavors. With citrus and pear on the nose, this wine went through 100% malolactic fermentation. Rich and balanced, this Chardonnay would be a great compliment to lobster and shellfish because of its concentration, yet it is held together with well integrated acidity. As a side note, we have recently tasted our first vintage from Talley Vineyards (1997) and are quite happy to report that the wine is showing beautifully.
2003 Red Wines
Rio Vista Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Dark ruby in color, this wine exhibits complex and unfolding aromas of forest floor, mushrooms, raspberry and cocoa. The aromas are lifted by partial whole cluster fermentation and this mouth filling wine with proper Pinot density and weight has a lingering finish. From this promising new vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills, this bold wine has depth, balance and structure and we are happy to present the inaugural release.
Solomon Hills Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley Produced from five clones, 115, 667, 777, Pommard and 2-A, grown in an exceptionally cool site from vines planted in 1999, this complex wine has aromas of cherries, animal fur, ham and sweet spice. With hard candied fruit on the palate and a spicy clean finish, the wine begs for a Santa Maria tri-tip sandwich.
Pisoni Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands Dark ruby in color and initially subdued, aeration reveals aromas of black cherries, plums, apricots and mink coat. Full fruit on the palate and extraordinary depth with hints of dark chocolate, this mouth filling wine has an exceptionally long finish with well integrated sweet tannin.
Bien Nacido Syrah Hillside Estate Santa Maria Valley From our own vines at Bien Nacido Vineyard, this wine comes from a 2.5 acre site planted in 1999 to the Estrella River clone. A classic cool climate syrah, the wine is dark ruby in color – limpid, yet opaque. Needing aeration or possibly decanting, this offering will show aromas of chocolate mint, white pepper in addition to sweet black fruits. With wonderful density on the palate, yet with moderate tannin, this wine has an effortless finish.
Garys’ Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands Planted in 1996 from cuttings of Estrella clone grown at Bien Nacido Vineyard, our first release of this wine gives us a chance to study the differences of the same clone grown at different sites. Nose initially a bit muted, but aeration reveals white pepper, black berries and blueberries. Dark ruby in color, there is a candy character to the fruit. The need to decant, suggests that this is a great candidate for cellaring. Full on the entry, mouth coating, but not heavy, the finish lingers and has definition.
Legerdemain Syrah Central Coast A blend of Bien Nacido and Garys’, this wine explores the possibilities in combining rather than comparing different vineyards. Results from blending aren’t always predictable ahead of time, however this happy combination complements the characteristics of each vineyard. With aromas of white pepper and chocolate au lait, this flavorful wines tastes of pomegranate and boysenberry. Firm tannin and acidity give the wine length on the palate.
